Parking Must Evolve PDF Print E-mail

It has come time for name Parking to take a giant leap, even as PPC and revenues dip. As posted in Domain Bits, Domainers are losing more and more cases of UDRP claims, justified or not, to meaningless companies due to poor parking. In this case, while some ads from the company did appear on the ChilliBeans.com website which might have triggered the decision, the company also brought the claim that Alexa traffic stats showed most of the users were from Brazil, represented as part of the claimant's copyright region.

With no traffic in hand, no data to show anything to the contrary, this case is lost and gone. Parking companies do not provide domainers with stats on clickthough, location, targetted terms, blockable countries, etc. Parking is a drop and insert operation forr domainers with more than 250 domains. It becomes nearly impossible to determine what is happening when you have over 5,000 domains.

Clearly the laws are not written to protect domainers. And if you are guilty of a pennies worth of clicks to the respondant, you are out on your million-dollar investment. This of course is massive overreaching by the industry. But if we cannot go to court and prove that we have data which shows anything to the contrary, how can parking survive?

Domainers now require more from their pages, whether developed or undeveloped. In order to protect themselves they'll need:

  • Type-in Traffic Stats
  • Search-driven Traffic Stats
  • Country of Origin Stats
  • IP information
  • Uniques vs Returning Users
  • Country/Region Blacklisting
  • Keyword Blacklisting
To name a few. I think we can do alot more and it's time Parking companies returned more bang for the buck. Google has already sent most companies scrambling and now this? It will take some time to recover but I think the steps we're outlining above should prove to be highly useful in the years of litigation to come.

Domain value has only recently started to become transparent to corporations. As lawsuits and decisions mount and ICANN continues to look the other way, domainers and their rights will quickly diminish without further investment.
